Before you convert
- Keep the WAV for editing: MP3 removes detail you mostly cannot hear. For further editing, keep the WAV and convert copies.
- High resolution WAV: 8, 16, 24 and 32-bit PCM and 32-bit float WAV files are read. 88.2 or 96 kHz recordings are resampled for MP3; the page shows the new rate.
- Mono stays mono: Mono recordings stay mono in the MP3, which keeps voice memos even smaller.
Frequently asked questions
How much smaller will my MP3 be?
A stereo WAV at 44.1 kHz uses 1411 kbps. At 192 kbps the MP3 is about seven times smaller, at 128 kbps about eleven times.
Can I convert several WAV files at once?
Not in one step. To join several recordings into one MP3, use Merge Audio.
How long can the recording be?
Files up to 2 GB and 2 hours of audio. Only the audio is read, so large video files are fine. A WAV result is capped at about 1 GB, which is roughly 90 minutes of stereo sound.
