Unix time

Time zones, precisely

  • One instant, many clocks: A timestamp is a single moment. It reads as a different local time in Vienna, New York or Tokyo; UTC is the neutral reference.
  • Your zone is your browser’s: Local times use the time zone your device is set to, shown by name. Nothing is guessed from an offset.
  • Seconds or milliseconds: Detection reads numbers below 100,000,000,000 as seconds. For anything unusual, choose the unit yourself.

Frequently asked questions

What happens in 2038?

Systems that store seconds in a signed 32-bit number overflow on 19 January 2038. This converter uses JavaScript dates, which work far beyond that, as well as before 1970 (negative timestamps).

Why does my local time look wrong?

It is shown in your device’s time zone. If the timestamp was written for another zone, compare the UTC line, which is the same everywhere.

Which date formats can I type?

ISO 8601 forms like 2024-05-01, 2024-05-01 14:30 or 2024-05-01T14:30:15.250+02:00. Without a zone, the time is read in the zone you choose below the field.

Are leap seconds included?

No. Unix time ignores leap seconds, like almost all computer clocks.
