Hash Generator

Create SHA-256, SHA-384 or SHA-512 hashes of text or a local file, and compare them.

Hash & Checksum

Text

What a hash is and is not

  • A fingerprint, not encryption: The original data cannot be recovered from a hash, and hashing does not protect or hide anything by itself.
  • SHA-2 by default: SHA-256, SHA-384 and SHA-512 are current standards. SHA-1 and MD5 are there to match old published checksums and are labelled legacy; CRC32 is a checksum, not cryptographic.
  • Files of any size: A file is read in pieces of a few megabytes and hashed as it goes, in a separate worker, so even large downloads do not have to fit in memory.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my hash differ from another tool’s?

Usually because of invisible differences in the input: a trailing line break, spaces, or a different character encoding. This tool hashes text as UTF-8 exactly as entered.

Can I hash a password with this?

You can compute the hash, but plain SHA-256 is not suitable for storing passwords. Password storage needs slow, salted algorithms such as Argon2 or bcrypt.

Is the comparison case-sensitive?

No. Uppercase and lowercase hex, spaces and a "sha256:" prefix are ignored when comparing.

What is HMAC for?

HMAC signs a message with a secret key, for example to check a webhook. It is not a plain hash: the same text with another key gives another value. The key stays in memory only.
