How things are counted

  • Words: Your browser’s language rules decide what a word is where available, which also works for many languages without spaces. Otherwise, letters and digits joined by apostrophes or hyphens count as one word.
  • Characters: As people see them: an emoji or an accented letter counts once, even if it takes several code units. The count without spaces leaves out all whitespace.
  • Lines and paragraphs: Lines are separated by line breaks; paragraphs by empty lines. Size shows the bytes the text takes as UTF-8.
  • Reading time: Assumes 200 words per minute, a common average for reading on screen.

Frequently asked questions

Why does another counter give a different number?

Counters disagree on hyphenated words, numbers, URLs and emoji. This one follows the rules above consistently; for a hard limit, check the rules of the place you submit to.

Does it count characters the way X or SMS do?

Not exactly. Some platforms count certain characters, such as emoji or links, differently. Use the character count as a close guide.
