UUID

Good to know

  • Cryptographic randomness: Values come from crypto.randomUUID or crypto.getRandomValues, never from Math.random.
  • Standard format: Version and variant bits follow RFC 9562: the third group always starts with 4 and the fourth with 8, 9, a or b.
  • Unique in practice: With 122 random bits, a repeated value is astronomically unlikely, though not mathematically impossible. Up to 1,000 at a time.
  • Version 7 sorts by time: A v7 UUID (RFC 9562) starts with the time in milliseconds, so a list sorts in the order it was made; Inspect reads the time back.

Frequently asked questions

Are UUIDs and GUIDs the same?

Yes. GUID is Microsoft’s name for the same 128-bit identifier. Some Microsoft tools show them in uppercase, which the option can do.

Can I use them as secret tokens?

They are random, but UUIDs are meant as identifiers, not secrets. For passwords or API keys, use a generator designed for that purpose.
