What WAV can and cannot do

  • No quality is restored: MP3 removed some detail when it was created. The WAV stores the decoded result exactly, but the removed detail does not come back.
  • No further loss: WAV adds no new compression, so editing the WAV and saving again does not degrade it further.
  • Small encoder gap: MP3 files often start with a few milliseconds of silence from the encoder. It is part of the MP3 and ends up in the WAV as well.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the WAV so much larger?

WAV stores every sample uncompressed: about 10 MB per minute for stereo at 44.1 kHz, compared with about 1.5 MB for a 192 kbps MP3.

Which bit depth does the WAV have?

16-bit PCM, the CD standard that virtually every program reads.

Is there a length limit?

Yes: WAV results up to about 1 GB, roughly 90 minutes of stereo audio at 44.1 kHz.
