Things to know

  • Choose a high bitrate: Coming from lossless audio, 256 or 320 kbps gives an MP3 that is very hard to tell apart from the original. It is still lossy, so keep your FLAC files as the originals.
  • Hi-res FLAC: 24-bit and 96 kHz FLAC files are resampled to 48 kHz for MP3, which is above what people can hear.
  • In Safari: Safari cannot stream-decode FLAC, so there the whole file is decoded at once. That works for album tracks and long pieces up to about 25 minutes of stereo audio; Chrome and Edge have no such limit.

Frequently asked questions

Can I convert a whole album at once?

One file at a time in this version. To join tracks into one MP3, use Merge Audio.

Are album tags and cover art kept?

Tags such as title, artist, album and cover art are not copied into the new file. The result contains the sound and the technical information a player needs.
