Extract Icon from DLL

Extract the icons stored in a Windows DLL or .mun file, as ICO or PNG.

Your files stay on your device.

Drop a DLL file here

Works with Windows programs and libraries (EXE, DLL, MUN, OCX, CPL, SCR), Windows shortcuts (LNK, URL), ICO and ICNS icon files, and AppImages.

Files are read as data on your device. Programs and apps are never run.

Working with system libraries

  • Many icon sets: Libraries often contain dozens or hundreds of icons. They are numbered in the order they are stored in the file, and the resource name is in the details.
  • .mun files: Windows keeps many system icons in these resource files. They use the same format as a DLL and are read the same way; whether icons can be read depends on the content of the file.
  • Libraries only: If the file is a program (EXE), you are pointed to the EXE page. The content of the file decides, not its extension.

Read as data, never executed

Only the headers, the resource table and the icon images are read. Nothing in the file is started or loaded, and nothing it refers to is opened. Large files are not read completely, only the parts that hold the icons.

Icon extraction does not determine whether a program is safe. UNQIRO is not a virus scanner: check unknown programs with antivirus software before running them.

Where this comes from

Based on the open-source IconGrabber project, a desktop tool by the same author. Its file parsing was rebuilt for the browser.

Frequently asked questions

Why does shell32.dll show no icons?

On current Windows versions its icons are stored in shell32.dll.mun in C:\Windows\SystemResources. The DLL itself is fine; it just no longer contains them.

Can I use Windows system icons in my own project?

The icons belong to Microsoft or the publisher of the library. Using them for your own shortcuts is common; check the license before you use them in something you publish.

Why is an icon set marked as incomplete?

Its list of sizes names an image that is missing or damaged. That size is left out, and the others are still offered.
