Works with Windows programs and libraries (EXE, DLL, MUN, OCX, CPL, SCR), Windows shortcuts (LNK, URL), ICO and ICNS icon files, and AppImages.

Files are read as data on your device. Programs and apps are never run.

What the list shows

  • Pixels and points: Retina images are listed with both sizes: a 1024 × 1024 image is the 512 pt icon at 2x. An icon can contain 512 × 512 twice, once at 1x and once as 256 pt at 2x; both are listed.
  • Dark, selected and template versions: Newer icons can include extra versions for dark mode and other states. They are listed and marked, not mixed into the normal sizes.
  • How images are stored: Most sizes are PNG and are passed on unchanged. Small sizes and older icons use Apple bitmap formats, which are converted to PNG with their transparency.
  • JPEG 2000: Some icons from around 2008 store large sizes as JPEG 2000. Current browsers cannot show it, so those images are listed without a preview or PNG.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get the icon straight from a .app?

A macOS app is a folder, not a file. Drop the .app on the start page: its files are listed and AppIcon.icns (in Contents/Resources) opens on its own. Or use Show Package Contents in Finder and drop the .icns file here.

Why do some apps have no .icns file?

Apps built for the newest macOS versions can keep their icon only in an asset catalog (Assets.car). That format is not documented by Apple and is not supported here.
