Choosing between MP3 and WAV

  • MP3 for sharing and storage: MP3 is small and plays everywhere. 192 kbps is a good default for music, 128 kbps is enough for speech, 256 or 320 kbps suits material you may edit again.
  • WAV for editing: WAV stores 16-bit samples without compression. It is large, but editors and samplers read it directly.
  • Converting cannot add quality: Turning an MP3 or M4A into WAV keeps what is left of the sound; it does not bring back what the first compression removed.

Frequently asked questions

Which formats can I convert?

MP3, WAV, M4A (AAC; ALAC where the browser decodes it), AAC, AIFF, FLAC, OGG (Vorbis or Opus) and WebM audio. The file is checked by its content, not its name, and a few milliseconds are decoded as a test before you convert.

Why does the sample rate sometimes change?

MP3 is written with 32, 44.1 or 48 kHz. Audio at other rates, for example 22.05 kHz voice recordings or 96 kHz studio files, is resampled, and the page tells you the new rate before you convert.

Are tags like title and artist kept?

Tags such as title, artist, album and cover art are not copied into the new file. The result contains the sound and the technical information a player needs.

How large can my file be?

Files up to 2 GB and 2 hours of audio. Only the audio is read, so large video files are fine. A WAV result is capped at about 1 GB, which is roughly 90 minutes of stereo sound.
