Sorting rules

  • Text or numbers, never mixed: Numeric sorting needs every item to be a number; otherwise the page names the first item that is not, instead of guessing.
  • Stable: Items that compare as equal keep their original order.
  • Exact items: Items are only reordered, never changed. Empty items can be removed with the option.
  • Language-aware: Text is sorted by the language rules of your browser, so accented letters land where readers expect them, and "Item 2" comes before "Item 10".

Frequently asked questions

Why does "Item 10" come before "Item 2"?

Only with "Numbers inside text in order" switched off: text is then compared character by character, and "1" comes before "2". The option is on from the start.

Which number formats are understood?

Plain numbers with an optional sign, decimal point and exponent, such as -3, 2.5 or 1e6. Thousands separators like 1,234 are not.

Does case matter?

Only with "Uppercase before lowercase" switched on; uppercase then comes before lowercase for otherwise equal words.
