URL Encode

Percent-encode text for use in a URL, as one value or as a whole address.

URL

Which mode to use

  • One value (encodeURIComponent): For a search term or other query value: & = ? / # are encoded too, so the value cannot break the URL around it.
  • Whole URL (encodeURI): For a complete address that contains spaces or non-ASCII letters: the characters that structure the URL are left as they are.
  • Spaces become %20: Or + in the third mode, Form value, which writes values as HTML forms send them. The URL Decoder reads both.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between one value and a whole URL?

For "a&b=c": one-value mode gives a%26b%3Dc, which a server reads as a single value. Whole-URL mode keeps & and =, because in a full URL they separate parameters.

Why are letters like ü turned into two codes?

They take two bytes in UTF-8, and each byte gets its own %XX code: ü becomes %C3%BC.

Which characters are never encoded?

Letters A to Z and a to z, digits and - _ . ! ~ * ' ( ) stay as they are in both modes.
