View ZIP Contents

See what is inside a ZIP file without extracting it: names, sizes and folders.

Your files stay on your device.

Drop a ZIP file to see what is inside

ZIP (also ZIP64), TAR, TAR.GZ and gzip archives, up to 16 GB.

The archive is read in your browser. Nothing inside it is opened, run or uploaded, and the archive itself is never changed.

What the list shows

  • Files and folders: Every entry with its path, size, packed size, compression method and date. Long lists are shown 200 entries at a time, and the search covers all of them.
  • Things to know: Encrypted files, compression methods that are not supported, duplicate paths and unsafe paths such as “../” are marked, so nothing surprises you when you unpack.
  • macOS and Windows archives: Names are read as UTF-8 or in the old DOS character set, as the archive says. Extra files that macOS adds, such as __MACOSX, are marked but not hidden.
  • Large archives: ZIP64 archives over 4 GB and archives with up to 100,000 entries can be listed. The details show how much of the file was actually read.

Read as data, never run

To list the archive, only the file list at the end of the ZIP is read; the data of a file is read only when you save it. Nothing inside the archive is opened, shown or run.

Why the file list sits at the end, and what a reader checks there, is explained in How a ZIP File Is Read: End Record and Central Directory.

Frequently asked questions

Can I see what is inside a password-protected ZIP?

Usually yes. Standard ZIP encryption protects the file contents but not the names, so the list is shown and encrypted files are marked.
