What the estimate looks at

  • Common passwords and words: The password is matched against lists of common passwords, names and English words, also written backwards or with letters swapped for look-alikes.
  • Patterns: Keyboard rows, repeats, sequences like abc or 123, dates and recent years make a password easier to guess; each one found is named.
  • Three attack speeds: Time to guess is shown for an online service that limits attempts, and for offline attacks against a slow and a fast password hash.

Frequently asked questions

Is the password I type sent anywhere?

No. The checker runs in this page; the password is not sent for processing and not stored. Closing the page discards it.

Why does another checker give a different result?

Many checkers count kinds of characters only, so P@ssw0rd1 looks strong to them. This one estimates how many guesses a real attacker would need, using known passwords and patterns.

Does "very strong" mean nobody can guess it?

No. The estimate cannot know what someone knows about you, or whether the password was used elsewhere and leaked. Use a different password for every account.
