Words instead of symbols

  • The EFF Large Wordlist: 7,776 common English words, chosen by the Electronic Frontier Foundation to be easy to spell and tell apart (CC BY 3.0 US).
  • About 12.9 bits a word: Each word is one of 7,776, drawn with secure randomness. Five words, the starting point, give about 64.6 bits; six words about 77.5.
  • Separator and capitals: Hyphen, space, dot or underscore between the words, and an optional capital first letter for sites that ask for one. Neither adds strength, since both are the same every time.

Frequently asked questions

Is a passphrase as safe as a random password?

At the same number of bits, yes. A passphrase reaches them with more characters, but it is far easier to remember and to type on a phone.

How many words should I use?

Five for most accounts, six or more for a password manager or disk encryption that you have to remember.

Can I pick the words myself?

Better not. Words people choose are predictable; the strength shown holds only for words drawn at random from the list.
