File Checksum

Check that a downloaded file matches its published SHA-256, SHA-1 or MD5 checksum.

File

Checking a download

  • Paste, choose, compare: Paste the checksum the download page publishes and choose the file: the page says Match or Does not match, in words.
  • Any size, in pieces: The file is read in pieces of a few megabytes in a separate worker, with progress, and never leaves this device.
  • Honest about algorithms: SHA-256 and SHA-512 are current. MD5 and SHA-1 still match old published checksums but do not stop deliberate tampering; CRC32 only catches accidental damage.

Frequently asked questions

Does a match mean the file is safe?

It means the file is exactly the one the checksum was made from. Whether that file is safe depends on where the checksum came from: take it from the publisher’s own page.

Which algorithm should I choose?

The one the publisher lists. By its length the pasted checksum usually tells: 64 hex digits are SHA-256, 32 are MD5.
