Extract ZIP

Open a ZIP archive and save single files from it, each checked before download.

Your files stay on your device.

Drop a ZIP file to take files out of it

ZIP (also ZIP64), TAR, TAR.GZ and gzip archives, up to 16 GB.

The archive is read in your browser. Nothing inside it is opened, run or uploaded, and the archive itself is never changed.

What to expect

  • Checked before saving: Every extracted file is compared with the checksum stored in the archive. A file that does not match is not offered, and the other files stay available.
  • Large archives: ZIP64 archives over 4 GB can be opened. A single file of up to 1 GB can be extracted, because the browser keeps it in memory until it is saved.
  • Safe with odd archives: Entries with paths such as “../”, links, encrypted files and damaged entries are listed but not extracted. Files are saved under their own name only, never into other folders.
  • One file at a time: Each file has its own Save file button, which works the same in every browser. To unpack everything at once, your computer’s own ZIP support is usually quicker.

Read as data, never run

To list the archive, only the file list at the end of the ZIP is read; the data of a file is read only when you save it. Nothing inside the archive is opened, shown or run.

Why the file list sits at the end, and what a reader checks there, is explained in How a ZIP File Is Read: End Record and Central Directory.

Frequently asked questions

Can I open password-protected ZIP files?

Not yet. Encrypted files are shown in the list and marked, but they cannot be extracted here. Files in the same archive that are not encrypted can still be saved.

Why does a file say its compression is not supported?

Most ZIP files use Deflate or no compression, and both work. Some tools can use other methods such as BZIP2, LZMA or Zstandard, which are not supported yet. The message names the method.

Can I extract a self-extracting ZIP (.exe)?

Often, yes. Many self-extracting archives are a ZIP with a small program in front. Drop the file onto the page: the ZIP part is read and the program is never run.
