AppImage Icon Extractor

Get the app icon out of a Linux AppImage and save it as PNG, without running the app.

Your files stay on your device.

Drop an AppImage here

Works with Windows programs and libraries (EXE, DLL, MUN, OCX, CPL, SCR), Windows shortcuts (LNK, URL), ICO and ICNS icon files, and AppImages.

Files are read as data on your device. Programs and apps are never run.

What the tool reads

  • PNG and SVG icons: PNG icons are saved unchanged. SVG icons are drawn as a PNG of 1024 pixels on the longer side. SVG files with scripts or references to other files are listed but not drawn.
  • Which AppImages work: Type 2 AppImages, the current format, with a SquashFS file system compressed with zstd or gzip. Type 1 AppImages, xz, LZ4 or LZO compression and DwarFS instead of SquashFS get a message that names the reason.
  • Which icons are found: The icon named in the desktop file, the .DirIcon that file managers show for the AppImage, and the sizes in the icon theme folders.

Read as a package, never executed

Only the start of the file, the tables of its file system, the desktop file and the icon files are read. The small start program at the beginning is only measured to find where the file system begins; neither it nor the app is started or loaded. Large AppImages are not read completely, only the parts that hold the icons.

Where the start program ends and the file system begins is explained in AppImage File Structure: ELF Runtime and SquashFS.

Icon extraction does not determine whether a program is safe. UNQIRO is not a virus scanner.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get the icon of other Linux programs?

Only from AppImages. A normal Linux program file does not contain its icon: the icon is installed separately, usually under /usr/share/icons. Flatpak, Snap, DEB and RPM packages are not supported here.
