Contrast Checker

Check the contrast of a text color on its background against WCAG 2 levels.

Contrast

What the ratio says

  • WCAG 2 formula: The ratio compares the relative luminance of text and background, from 1:1 (the same) to 21:1 (black on white).
  • Thresholds, not rounding: AA needs 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text and interface parts; AAA 7:1 and 4.5:1. The exact ratio decides: 4.49:1 does not pass AA.
  • For this pair: Contrast belongs to two colors together. No color is accessible on its own; size, weight and context matter too.

Frequently asked questions

What counts as large text?

In WCAG 2, 24 px or larger, or 18.66 px (14 pt) bold or larger.

What about transparent text colors?

A translucent text color is first laid over the background, then measured. The background itself must be opaque.

Does this use APCA?

No. APCA is a proposed method for a future WCAG and not yet a standard; this checker uses the WCAG 2 ratio that guidelines and laws refer to.
