What counts as a character

  • As people see them: An emoji, a flag or an accented letter counts once, even when it is made of several code points.
  • With and without spaces: Both counts are shown; the count without spaces leaves out every kind of whitespace, including line breaks.
  • Bytes: The size in UTF-8 is shown too, for limits that are set in bytes, such as some databases and SMS gateways.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the byte count higher than the character count?

In UTF-8, letters outside basic Latin take two to four bytes. "é" is one character but two bytes; most emoji take four.

Do line breaks count?

Yes, each line break counts as one character in the count with spaces.
