Good to know

  • The frame starts around the whole image. Drag a corner or side, or pick a ratio such as 1:1 or 16:9; under Fine tune you can type the exact pixels.
  • The crop keeps the format: a PNG stays a lossless PNG, JPG and WebP are saved again at quality 92. The pixels you keep are not resized.
  • JPG, PNG and WebP up to 40 megapixels.

Frequently asked questions

Does cropping reduce the image quality?

The pixels you keep are not resized. A PNG is saved without loss; JPG and WebP are saved again at a high quality, which is not visible in normal use.

Is a phone photo cropped the way I see it?

Yes. Photos are turned upright first, as they are shown, and the frame is drawn on that picture, so the crop is exactly the part you selected.

Does cropping keep the photo metadata?

Not in the new image: your browser saves it without camera details, the date taken or GPS location. To see what a photo contains first, open Image Metadata.
